Sewage Cleanup Cincinnati
Category 3 damage, handled safely

We answer 24/7. Help is on the way. Call (513) 280-5800.

A sewage backup isn’t just a mess — it’s a contamination problem. A backed-up sewer line, an overwhelmed sump pump, or a failed pump station means Category 3 “black water” that carries real health risk. An IICRC-certified Yeti, who is also background-checked, is on site to lead every sewage job, with the crew fully suited in PPE. Water. Fire. Mold. Handled.

What is “Category 3” sewage damage?

Not all water damage is the same, and the IICRC S500 standard classifies it for a reason. That classification is exactly why a sewage loss is handled completely differently than a clean-water basement flood.

Category 1

The clean-water loss most people picture — a basement flooded from a clean supply source. It’s dried and restored, not decontaminated.

Category 3 — “black water”

A sewer backup, raw sewage, or floodwater that’s picked up ground contamination. It carries bacteria and pathogens — so more surfaces have to come out, the crew works fully suited in PPE from the moment they arrive, and every contaminated hard surface gets treated with an EPA-registered antimicrobial as part of the job.

Not sure which category your loss is? That’s exactly what our arrival assessment is for — we won’t guess, and we won’t skip the safety steps to save time.

How it works

Our Category 3 sewage cleanup process

The same certified process on every sewage call — the PPE, containment, and antimicrobial steps aren’t optional add-ons, they’re how the job gets done safely.

1

Confirm the source is stopped

If it’s a sewer line or plumbing issue, we coordinate directly with a plumber so the backup doesn’t happen again mid-job.

2

PPE, every time

Our crew suits up in respirators, gloves, and rubber boots before touching anything — Category 3 water isn’t safe to handle bare-handed, full stop.

3

Document first

A full photo walkthrough before demo starts, plus a FLIR thermal camera to find wet zones you can’t see and a Protimeter moisture meter for exact readings your adjuster will need.

4

Containment

Heavy plastic sheeting and a zip-wall system seal off the work area. HEPA air scrubbers run for the entire job, not just during demo.

5

Antimicrobial treatment

Every contaminated hard surface gets an EPA-registered antimicrobial applied at the start — this isn’t optional on a sewage loss.

6

Removal

Anything porous the sewage touched comes out and gets double-bagged. Concrete, block, steel studs, and pressure-treated wood stay — tested, treated, and dried in place.

7

Dry & monitor

Commercial dehumidifiers and air movers run continuously, HEPA scrubbers stay on through the whole dry, and antimicrobial is reapplied every 1–2 days.

8

Close-out report

Final moisture readings and photos go into a completion report — insurance adjusters typically require this before they’ll approve reconstruction.

Timeline

Sewage jobs typically run 7–10 days of active drying and 10–14 days total from start to finish — longer than a clean-water loss because of the extra demo work and the added drying time for concrete and block.

What stays, what goes

On a sewage loss, porous materials come out — hard surfaces get treated

Anything porous the sewage touched can’t be safely decontaminated, so it’s removed and double-bagged. Solid, non-porous structure stays in place — tested, treated with antimicrobial, and dried rather than replaced.

Comes out & double-bagged

  • ×Drywall (cut with a safety buffer above the moisture line)
  • ×Fiberglass insulation
  • ×Carpet and pad
  • ×Vinyl plank or laminate flooring
  • ×Base molding / trim
  • ×Contaminated personal property

Stays — treated & dried

  • ✓Concrete slabs
  • ✓Concrete or block foundation walls
  • ✓Steel studs
  • ✓Pressure-treated wood near the slab
  • ✓Tile on concrete — if grout is intact and sewage never got underneath
Straight pricing

Sewage cleanup cost in Cincinnati

Honest, real ranges instead of a “call for pricing” wall. For a 500-square-foot finished basement, water mitigation typically runs $3,000–$7,000 — and Category 3 sewage jobs push well past that mark because of the hazmat handling involved.

We don’t publish a hard ceiling on the sewage-specific range — we’d rather give you a real number after the on-site assessment than guess one here.

✓ Your on-site assessment is free — no obligation.
ScopeTypical cost
Basement water mitigation (500 sq ft finished, drying only)$3,000 – $7,000
Category 3 sewage cleanupWell past $7,000
Ranges are drying/mitigation only — not counting reconstruction.

What moves the price

How long the water sat

48+ hours means deeper damage and more material to remove — the single biggest factor.

Finished vs. unfinished space

A finished basement runs roughly 40% more, with flooring, drywall, and trim to deal with on top of the structure.

Hazmat handling

Category 3 losses push past a standard water bill because of the PPE, containment, and antimicrobial work involved.

Certified oversight, every time

What makes a sewage job different from a standard water call

Matt Heinbaugh, our owner, is ASD, WRT, and AMRT certified with 20+ years in restoration, and an IICRC-certified Yeti leads every sewage job. The PPE, containment, and antimicrobial steps aren’t upsells added to a Category 3 invoice — they’re required to do the job safely, and we run them the same way on every sewage call. The Yeti leading your job is background-checked before they’re ever inside your home, which matters more on a contamination job than almost any other kind of call.

Sewage cleanup FAQs

Will my insurance cover this?

It depends on the cause — sudden events like a sewer backup are often covered, while damage from long-term neglect usually isn’t. We document every reading and photo your adjuster will ask for either way.

Do I need to leave my home during the cleanup?

Depends on the extent of the contamination and containment area — we’ll walk you through what’s realistic for your specific job during the initial assessment.

Why can’t I just run some fans from the hardware store?

Category 3 water carries bacteria and pathogens — this isn’t a drying problem you can fan your way through. Contaminated materials need to be safely removed and treated, not just dried, or you’re left with a hidden health hazard.

Do you really need to cut the drywall if it looks dry on the surface?

Yes, on a sewage loss — any drywall the water touched gets removed with a buffer above the highest reading, because it can’t be safely decontaminated the way concrete or steel can.

Can you save my flooring?

Sometimes. Tile on concrete can often be saved if the grout stayed intact and sewage didn’t get underneath it. Carpet, pad, vinyl plank, and laminate touched by Category 3 water are removed — they can’t be safely cleaned.

Is mold already growing?

Possibly, especially if the water sat for a while before you called. Our assessment checks for it, and our drying process is built to prevent it from taking hold in the first place.

What do I do with furniture and belongings in the affected area?

We’ll tell you what’s salvageable versus what has to go during the walkthrough — contaminated porous items (upholstery, cardboard, some personal property) typically can’t be saved on a Category 3 loss.

Do I need to call my insurance before you start?

Call us first if it’s an active emergency — we can start mitigation and document everything your insurer will need, and coordinate the claim alongside the work.

How does my home get put back together after?

Once drying and remediation are complete, we hand off a full completion report with photos and moisture readings for your adjuster, so reconstruction can move forward with a clean, documented starting point.
